Talking Research: Sharing your story with the world

Practical advice and strategies on how to best communicate your research with an audience beyond the campus gates. A panel discussion and Q&A featuring media professionals, McMaster media relations officers and media savvy researchers.

Panelists include:

Michelle Donovan and Wade Hemsworth, Media Relations Managers, Office of Communications and Public Affairs, McMaster University

Joseph Kim - Joe Kim is an Associate Professor in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour at McMaster University and is actively involved in the scholarship of teaching and learning. He coordinates the innovative McMaster Introductory Psychology program which combines traditional lectures with interactive on-line resources and small group tutorials. The program has been prominently featured in Maclean’s, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and numerous education media outlets. He directs the Applied Cognition in Education Lab (www.science.mcmaster.ca/acelab) which aims to understand how cognitive principles such as attention, memory and learning can be applied to develop evidence-based interventions in education and training. The lab uses a variety of tools including cognitive and behavioural testing, eye-tracking and EEG.

Emily Chung - Writer, CBC - Emily Chung is an award-winning journalist who writes science and technology news for CBCNews.ca. She's also the producer for the CBC's Technology and Science page. Before moving to Toronto, she covered local news for CBC Ottawa and the Vancouver Sun. She has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of British Columbia.

Steve Buist - Writer, Hamilton Spectator - Steve Buist is an investigative reporter and feature writer at the Hamilton Spectator. He is responsible for producing large investigative projects, such as the highly-acclaimed Code Red project, which began in 2010 and has been examining the connections between health and poverty by mapping the health of Hamiltonians down to the level of neighbourhoods. Buist has won three National Newspaper Awards and been nominated five other times. He’s also been named the Canadian Association of Journalists’ Investigative Journalist of the Year three times and been named Ontario’s Journalist of the Year five times. In 2014, Buist won one of the world’s most prestigious cancer journalism awards as he earned the 2014 Best Cancer Reporter Award from the European School of Oncology. He has a degree in human biology and a longstanding interest in science and science journalism.

Jim Poling - Editor, Hamilton Spectator- Jim Poling is managing editor at the Hamilton Spectator, where he oversees a team of reporters and editors and runs a significant newsfile. He’s been a reporter on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, at Queen’s Park in Toronto and his work as a reporter and editor includes several national and international award-winning portfolios. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Vox Libera press freedom award for mentoring and giving voice to internationally-trained journalists. He has been a journalist for over 30 years.
